ABOUT ELIXIR
STRINGS

GENERAL

Do ELIXIR Strings sound different than ordinary strings?

With NANOWEB® Technology, strings sound and feel more like natural strings. They are bright and lively, and the Technology is so thin that you can barely tell it's there. With POLYWEB Technology, strings sound warm, "played-in."

What's the difference between NANOWEB® and POLYWEB® TECHNOLOGIES?

The difference between our coating "flavors" lies in the tone and feel. Elixir® Strings with NANOWEB Technology sound and feel more like traditional, natural strings. They are bright and lively, and the coating is so thin that you can barely tell it's there.

Elixir Strings with POLYWEB Technology have a warm, "played-in" tone.

While our POLYWEB and NANOWEB Technologies differ in tone and feel, both offer a smooth feel, reduce finger squeak, and deliver extended tone life.

What is the difference between Acoustic 80/20 Bronze and Phosphor Bronze guitar strings?

Acoustic 80/20 Bronze and Phosphor Bronze guitar strings offer players different tone options. Both string types are popular and therefore selecting the right strings is a matter of personal preference. Here's what we can tell you:

  • 80/20 Bronze acoustic guitar strings offer a bright, bell-like tone. The 80/20 bronze name is a misnomer in the music industry as the metal wrap wire composition is 80% copper and 20% zinc, which is brass. Bronze is technically an alloy of copper and tin.
  • Phosphor Bronze acoustic guitar strings offer a tone with both warmth and sparkle. The strings are named after the wrap wire material, which is a copper alloy wrap wire with roughly 8% tin and a small amount of Phosphorous.

Regardless of your string preference, Elixir Strings protects all of our wound strings, keeping tone-killing gunk out of the gaps between the windings. Our innovative Anti-Rust Plated Plain Steel Strings also resist tone-deadening corrosion, ensuring longer life for the entire set.

What makes your anti-rust plated strings special?

As you know, sets are made up of wound and plain steel strings. In addition to the NANOWEB and POLYWEB Technologies that protect all wound strings, Elixir Plain Steel Strings feature an innovative Anti-Rust Plating that prevents rust and corrosion and extends the life of plain steel strings.

What is the difference in your TECHNOLOGIES?

Whether you choose our OPTIWEB, NANOWEB or POLYWEB Technology electric strings, you can rest assured that they all provide the long tone-life players have come to expect from Elixir Strings. There are some differences among them.

OPTIWEB Technology strings sound like an uncoated string, with a crisp tone and natural feel. These are often the strings of choice for players who prefer the tone and feel of natural strings.
NANOWEB Technology strings have a bright tone and smooth feel.
POLYWEB Technology strings have a warm tone with a slick, fast feel.

Are POLYWEB TECHNOLOGY guitar strings easier on fingers?

Players like our POLYWEB Technology strings for a number of reasons.

Players who are just starting to play or have soft fingertips, prefer POLYWEB Technology strings. Others like the slick and fast feel of the POLYWEB Technology.

Regardless of the Elixir Strings Technology you choose, all offer the same extended tone life, reduced finger squeak and enhanced playability that players have come to expect from Elixir Strings.

What is HD Light gauge?

Elixir HD Light Strings have a bolder high end and fuller low end with a balanced voice across all the strings. This was achieved by blending the plain steel strings of a medium gauge set with the wound strings of a light gauge set, bridged by a custom .025 third string. .013, .017, .025, .032, .042, .053

The increased tension of the treble strings improves their articulation. The interaction of the tension profile with the soundboard also adds to the harmonic content of the bass strings.

Elixir HD Light Strings are available in both Phosphor Bronze with NANOWEB Technology and 80/20 Bronze with NANOWEB Technology.

The HD Light strings deliver the same extended tone life that players have come to expect from all Elixir Strings.

Do you make guitar strings that feel like NATURAL strings?

Yes. Our OPTIWEB Technology Electric Guitar Strings play like a natural string but last like Elixir Strings.

Players that use natural electric guitar strings love their traditional sound and feel but often sacrifice tone life. There’s no need for that compromise any longer with Elixir Electric Strings with OPTIWEB Technology.

The exclusive OPTIWEB Technology not only protects the guitar string from the elements for longer tone life, but also allows the string to vibrate with less damping – for a crisp tone with a firm, natural grip that puts you in control of bends, vibrato and sustain.

ACOUSTIC GUITAR STRINGS

What are Phosphor Bronze acoustic guitar strings?

The wrap wire material determines the name of the string. The wrap wire on phosphor bronze strings is constructed of a copper alloy consisting of small amounts of phosphorous and approximately 8% tin.

How long do Phosphor Bronze strings last?

Well, it depends.

With natural guitar strings, your tone dies quickly. Corrosion attacks the metal surface, and dirt and sweat on your fingers clog the space between the string windings, thus vibration dampens and tone dies.

With guitar strings that have Elixir Technoloy, a protective barrier keeps the gunk out and the tone sounding new longer.

With Elixir Technologu Guitar Strings, our exclusive ultra-thin material acts as a physical barrier between the string and its damaging environment. Not only is the outer string surface protected, but more importantly, the gaps between the windings too. This keeps tone killing gunk and corrosion from building up. And that’s why players swear by Elixir Strings over any other strings they’ve tried. They insist our tone sounds new and our strings feel fresh the longest.

What is the best Phosphor Bronze string gauge?

The best selling string gauge for our acoustic phosphor bronze guitar strings is the 12-53, our light gauge. Other popular gauging is the custom light (11-52) and medium (13-56).

The gauge you play should be determined by a combination of factors such as the tone you want, your playing style and your guitar model.

What are 80/20 Bronze guitar strings?

80/20 Bronze acoustic guitar strings offer a bright and focused tone. The 80/20 Bronze name is a misnomer in the music industry as the metal wrap wire composition is 80% copper and 20% zinc, which is brass. Bronze is technically an alloy of copper and tin.

Do 80/20 Bronze NATURAL acoustic guitar strings feel different than 80/20 Bronze NANOWEB TECHNOLOGY guitar strings?

Yes. Players can easily feel the difference between natural and Elixir Technology guitar strings. Natural strings quickly feel crusty or rough. Elixir 80/20 Bronze Strings with NANOWEB Technology deliver a smooth feel that also both enhances playability and reduces finger squeak.

How long do 80/20 strings last?

Elixir Strings keep your guitar sounding great, gig after gig, session after session. Our exclusive featherweight Technology protects your guitar strings from corrosion and gunk build up in the gaps between the windings. Your Elixir Strings retain their out of the box tone longer than any other brand’s strings.

Uncoated strings just don’t last as long. There’s nothing standing between the dirt, sweat and grime on your fingertips and the guitar strings. Uncoated strings corrode and vibration dampens more quickly, leaving your strings dull and rough.

Will Elixir strings work on a resonator guitar?

Yes, and we actually offer a custom set designed for resonator guitars

ELECTRIC GUITAR STRINGS

What’s the difference between coated and uncoated electric guitar strings?

Choosing the tone and feel of a natural electric string used to mean having to compromise tone life. Not any longer. With Elixir Strings the entire string is protected. The Technology – whether it be OPTIWEB, NANOWEB or POLYWEB – protects not only the outer string surface, but also the gaps between the windings. As a result, according to players Elixir Strings retain their tone longer than any other brand's string.

How should I care for Elixir Electric Strings while they’re on my guitar?

The featherweight Technology on Elixir Electric Strings serve as a protective barrier against tone-killing dirt and debris that builds up between the windings of a string. Although it is good practice to wipe your strings with a dry cloth after playing to remove any loose debris or moisture, we do not recommend the use of any cleaners or lubricants.

Do the OPTIWEB TECHNOLOGY strings last as long as the other Elixir TECHNOLOGY electric strings?

Yes. All Elixir Strings regardless of Technology deliver the signature long tone life players have come to expect.

Are your NANOWEB TECHNOLOGY electric strings as durable as the other electric TECHNOLOGY options?

Yes. Our Nickel-Plated Steel Strings with OPTIWEB, NANOWEB or POLYWEB Technology offer the same signature long tone life players have come to expect from Elixir Strings.

What gauge strings do most electric guitarists use?

The best-selling gauge for Elixir Electric Guitar Strings is our light gauge, 10-46. The custom light, 9-46, is also very popular. When finding the right gauge for your electric guitar, there are many factors to consider including your technique.

Elixir Strings makes a variety of gauging for standard six-string guitars and extended range too.

Are POLYWEB TECHNOLOGY electric guitar strings any good?

Our POLYWEB Technology Nickel Plated Steel Electric Guitar Strings have been on the market since the late 1990s. They continue to be a favorite among players looking for a warm tone and a comfortable feel. And they are just as durable as our other Technologies. All three – OPTIWEB, NANOWEB and POLYWEB – deliver the same extended tone life that players have come to expect from Elixir Strings.

BASS GUITAR STRINGS

What is the difference between Nickel Plated Steel and Stainless Steel eclectic bass strings?

Nickel Plated Steel and Stainless Steel electric bass strings offer players different tone options. Both string types are popular and, therefore, selecting the right strings is a matter of personal preference. Here's what we can tell you:

Nickel Plated Steel Bass Strings deliver a rich rounded tone with greater clarity and heavier mid-range presence.

Stainless Steel Bass Strings combine concentrated growling mids with an articulate pop and punch.

Our entire range of round-wound bass strings feature NANOWEB® Technology designed specifically for bass raising the bar for bass performance.

Are your bass strings round wound?

Our entire line of bass guitar strings is round wound. These are the go-to for many bass players because of their rich, round tone. With natural round wound strings, dirt and debris can collect between the windings, ultimately killing their tone.

Elixir Strings are different. Our strings are protected with a proprietary featherweight Tec nology that acts as a barrier. Not only is the outer string surface protected, but more importantly, the gaps between the windings are too. Blocking gunk and corrosion from building up. As a result, according to players, Elixir Strings retain their tone longer than any other brand's string.

Are your electric bass Stainless Steel strings comfortable to play?

Our stainless steel strings are protected by our NANOWEB Technology made specifically for bass guitars, providing a smooth, comfortable feel and a bright tone that lasts gig after gig after gig.

Do you make taper wound bass strings?

Yes! We offer taper wound bass strings for 4-, 5- and 6-string sets.

Will your bass strings WITH ELIXIR TECHNOLOGY hold up?

Our NANOWEB Technology designed exclusively for bass offers consistent durability and response during hard hitting attacks. And since they are made by Elixir Strings, they will sound and feel fresh for longer.
